Date: 25 February 2025
Ljubljana, 25 February 2025 – At its annual general meeting today, the Engineering Academy of Slovenia (IAS) adopted its programme of work and elected new extraordinary, regular, corresponding and honorary IAS members. To encourage the involvement of younger engineers in IAS activities, the IAS has established the Young Engineering Academy of Slovenia, which will begin its activities this year. Saša Senica, a journalist from the newspaper DELO, won the award for the journalist who has promoted engineering and science in the media with the highest quality in the past year.
IAS President Prof. Dr. Matjaž Mikoš highlighted several achievements from 2024: the "Why Slovenia is Lagging Behind Comparable EU Countries" event held in December with SAZU; participation in the Hydrogen Ecosystem Consortium; promotion of engineering; and a successful application for the European project "Iphigeneia". The adopted Work Programme for 2025 identifies the following priority activities: improving the education and training of engineers, advising policymakers on creating added value from engineering excellence, establishing and launching the Slovenian Young Engineering Academy, and collaborating with all research disciplines to successfully implement breakthrough ideas.
Together with SAZU, we have proposed the introduction of a Scientific Advice Mechanism (SAM) to the Government of the Republic of Slovenia, which will enable projects, analyses and long-term goals to be planned based on scientific facts.
At the General Assembly, Prof. Dr. Janko Drnovšek, Prof. Dr. Edvard Govekar, Prof. Dr. Jure Knez, Prof. Dr. Blaž Likozar, Prof. Dr. Jožica Rejec, Prof. Dr. Božidar Šarler and Prof. Dr. Iztok Tiselj were elected as new Extraordinary Members of the Slovenian Academy of Engineering.
