The Slovenian Academy of Engineering is participating in the European IFIGENEIA project
The Slovenian Academy of Engineering (IAS) is a partner in the European research and innovation project IFIGENEIA—Innovative Facility for Isotope Generation with Efficient Ion Accelerator—whose goal is to develop the technological and organizational foundations for the sustainable production of radioisotopes using linear particle accelerators (LINAC).
Radioisotopes play an increasingly important role in modern medicine, particularly in the early detection and treatment of cancer, neurological, and other diseases. The project aims to contribute to greater European self-sufficiency in their production and to the development of more accessible, efficient, and environmentally sound technologies.
The four-year project (2025–2029) is being carried out under the Horizon Europe program, with a total budget of 6 million euros. It brings together 22 partners from six countries and is coordinated by Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. Among the partners are CERN, the German research center GSI, and the German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ).
A key objective of the project is to establish three interconnected centers of excellence in Greece, Slovenia, and Cyprus. In addition to IAS, the Slovenian partners include the University of Ljubljana, the “Jožef Stefan” Institute, the company Cosylab, and the Slovenian Innovation Hub.
The role of IAS is primarily to bring together engineering expertise, research institutions, the business community, and decision-makers, and to collaborate in shaping the strategic foundations for the development of the Slovenian innovation ecosystem in the fields of accelerator technologies and nuclear medicine.
The IFIGENEIA project represents a significant opportunity to transfer cutting-edge knowledge into medical practice, develop new technologies, and strengthen the international standing of Slovenian engineering.
