Europe's leading science academies are calling for a robust framework programme for research and innovation.
An open letter has been sent by more than 30 European science academies to the President of the European Commission, the President of the European Council, the Commissioner for Research and Innovation, and the Commissioner for Budget and Public Administration. The letter is entitled:

The two Slovenian academies established by law — the Slovenian Academy of Sciences and Arts, and the Slovenian Academy of Engineering — have signed the letter.
The European academies warn:
Europe has lost its leading position in research and innovation. European universities are middle-ranked in various rankings; EU spending on research and innovation is significantly lower than that of global competitors; and the number of high-impact publications and patent applications is declining. Europe is falling behind, having been overtaken by the US, China and other countries. Overall, Europe is under-investing, particularly in research and innovation.

The letter draws particular attention to a report prepared in autumn 2024 by a group of 15 experts led by Manuel Heitor, the former Portuguese Minister for Research.
