After two decades, Prof. Mitjan Kalin is the first European to receive the ASME Mayo D. Hersey Award, the highest academic award in the field of tribology.
Prof. Mitjan Kalin is the first European since 2004 to receive the ASME Mayo D. Hersey Award, considered the highest academic award in tribology worldwide. The Mayo D. Hersey Award is given to an individual in recognition of outstanding and sustained contributions over a long period of time to the advancement of the science and engineering of tribology. Outstanding contributions may be the result of significant original research in one or more of the many scientific disciplines related to lubrication, excellence and creativity in the practice of lubrication engineering, or persistent and sincere efforts and the dissemination of understanding about lubrication theory and practice.
Prof. Kalin is also the recipient of the ASME Burt L. Newkirk Award for Excellence in Tribology under the Age of 40, one of only ten individuals to have received both ASME Tribology Awards to date. He is a recipient of the Zois Award, the Zois Prize, the University of Ljubljana Gold Plaque, and a member of the European Academy of Arts and Sciences, a member of the Engineering Academy of Slovenia, a member of the International Academy of Engineering, and an Honorary Fellow of the Society of Tribologists STLE. He currently serves on the boards of both global tribology organisations, as a member of the Board of Directors of the Society of Tribologists and Lubrication Engineers STLE, and as a member of the Executive Committee and Vice President of the International Tribology Council ITC. He has been Editor-in-Chief of SCI's Lubrication Science for over a decade and is the founder of the international conference series Polytrib.
